What the number actually measures, and why 15 and 20 look so different on.
Denier measures weight, not thickness, not quality, and not durability. One denier is the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of a single fibre. That is the whole definition. A 15 denier stocking is built from yarn where 9,000 metres weighs 15 grams; a 60 denier tight uses yarn four times heavier. Everything people assume denier tells them — how sheer it looks, how long it lasts, how warm it is — follows from that number only loosely.
The number matters because it is the one specification every manufacturer prints and almost none of them explain. Learn to read it and you stop buying the same disappointing pair twice.
Denier correlates reliably with opacity, and that is mostly it. Below about 10, you are looking at genuine transparency — skin tone reads straight through and the stocking registers as a sheen rather than a colour. Between 10 and 20 you get the classic sheer: visible as a garment, still translucent. At 30 to 40 the leg reads as tinted rather than bare. Past 50 you are into opaque, and past 80 the fabric behaves more like knitwear than hosiery.

What denier does not predict is durability. A 40 denier tight with poor yarn and a loose knit will ladder faster than a well-made 15. Two pairs at the same denier can differ enormously depending on fibre quality, knit density and how much elastane is blended in. Denier tells you how heavy the yarn is, not how well anyone used it.
This is the question we get most, and the answer is that a third of the difference is denier and two thirds is everything else.
Knit density is the largest factor. Two stockings can share a denier and differ by thousands of stitches per square inch. A denser knit at 15 denier will look more substantial than a loose knit at 20, because opacity comes from how much of the leg the fabric physically covers, not from how heavy each individual thread is.
Fibre cross-section is the second factor. Nylon filaments can be extruded round, trilobal or flat. Trilobal filaments have three faces that catch light and throw it back — that is where a shine finish comes from. Flat or matte filaments at the identical denier will read darker and more opaque because they absorb light instead of reflecting it. Two 20 denier stockings, one matte and one trilobal, will not look like the same weight.
Elastane content is the third. A stocking with 12 percent elastane stretches further over the leg, which thins the fabric under tension and makes it look sheerer in wear than it did in the packet. A lower-stretch pair at the same denier holds its density. This is also why the same pair looks sheerer over a larger calf — you are seeing the same yarn spread across more area.
Because stretch thins the fabric, denier and fit are not independent. A 20 denier stocking sized correctly reads as 20 denier. The same stocking one size too small reads closer to 12, sits with visible strain lines at the ankle and knee, and will ladder within a few wears. If you want the opacity the packet promised, size up rather than down.
This matters most in the extended range. A 15 denier at Q+ needs more yarn spread over more leg, so decent manufacturers knit their larger sizes at higher density to compensate. Manufacturers who do not simply give you a sheerer, weaker garment and call it the same product. It is worth checking whether a brand states this — ours does, on every listing.
Denier is a weight measurement that predicts opacity and nothing else. Use it to pick a season. Use knit density, finish and elastane content to pick a pair. And use the size chart before either, because the best 15 denier in the world reads as 8 denier and lasts a fortnight if you buy it a size too small.
